An essential area to becoming the best driver and reaching the top is ensuring you have the belief to carry out the goals and desires you have chosen! This concept is defined as self-efficacy, basically your judgment about your capability to successfully perform a task. For you drivers this relates to your judgment of your ability to drive a particular track or achieve a particular result.
Your beliefs in your ability will play a crucial role in determining:
- How much effort you will expend on a particular task (i.e. motivation)
- How long you will maintain effort when confronted with setbacks and obstacles (i.e. mental toughness)
So two massive areas that determine success can be either enhanced or decreased through your belief in your ability (the technical term for this is self-efficacy).
1) Motivation:
You will be more motivated if you believe that the work you put in will result in the outcome you desire. Motivation is supremely important for working towards the results that you want and helping you to achieve your goals. No amount of talent will get you over the line and into F1 if you are not motivated to achieve this goal!
2) Mental Toughness:
Mental toughness is an essential area for reaching the top. Being able to deal with setbacks and obstacles, keep sight of your dream and persisting is crucial to success. All the top boys in F1 have had to deal with obstacles and setbacks along the way – look at the years that Jenson Button spent in average teams, how mentally tough would you have to be to stay motivated and persist even in the frustration of using average machines?
So the question is how do you cultivate this confidence / self-efficacy to get the best results?
Briefly these are:
1) Building on your past performances and previous success
2) Modeling or observing successful drivers and emulating their actions
3) Becoming aware of your self-talk
In the next post I will outline these powerful strategies to take you to the top in more detail!
Keep Racing!
